Ep.14: Hanna Barbera – Top 11 Cartoons

Intro

Hello and Welcome to this episode of the podcast, "The Mnemonic Tree", where we add a single mnemonic leaf to our Tree of Knowledge.

Today's episode will be on Hanna Barbera Cartoons, so we will take a bit of a step back to our childhood for this one.

I for one remember waking up early on a Saturday morning to watch one of my favourites, which was “The Wacky Races”, along with staples of The Flintstones, Quick Draw McGraw, Yogi Bear, and the Herculoids, which all held very fond childhood memories.

Today’s episode will be on the top 11 cartoons of Hanna Barbera.

So, with no further ado, we will begin with a summary from Wikipedia.

Wikipedia Summary

Hanna-Barbera (/ˈhænə ˈbɑːrbɛərə/ BAR-bair-ə)[1] was an American animation studio and production company that was active from 1957 until it was absorbed into Warner Bros. Animation in 2001. It was founded on July 7, 1957, by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera following the decision of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) to close its in-house cartoon studio,[2] and was formerly headquartered on Cahuenga Boulevard from 1960 until 1998 and at the Sherman Oaks Galleria in Sherman Oaks, both in Los Angeles, California.

It produced many successful television shows, including The Huckleberry Hound ShowThe FlintstonesThe Yogi Bear ShowTop CatThe JetsonsJonny QuestWacky RacesScooby-Doo, Where Are You! and The Smurfs,[3] winning Hanna-Barbera a record-breaking eight Emmy Awards[4][5] while new feature-length movies and specials were made.

The profitability of Saturday-morning cartoons was eclipsed by weekday afternoon syndication after the studio's fortunes declined by the 1980s. Taft Broadcasting acquired Hanna-Barbera in 1966 and retained ownership until 1991[6] when Turner Broadcasting System acquired the studio, using the back catalog to establish Cartoon Network the following year.[7][8][9]

Turner later merged in 1996 with Time Warner (currently Warner Bros. Discovery).[10] After Hanna died in 2001, Hanna-Barbera as a standalone company was folded into Warner Bros. Animation. Since then, the Hanna-Barbera name has been used primarily for marketing and copyright purposes.

Five Fun Facts

1.       Most of the Hanna-Barbera characters had collars and this was for a good reason.  Money was extremely tight and this allowed the animators to mainly focus on the head above the collar, as the body could remain relatively static, hence less pictures.

2.      Hanna-Barbera’s creation “Tom and Jerry” won a total of seven academy awards.

3.      Jack Nicholson showed promise as an animator whilst working as a mailroom clerk for MGM.  So much so, that he was offered a job as an animator by Hanna and Barbera, which he declined in pursuit of an acting career.

4.      Some debate still exists as to where Yogi Bear got his name.  Yogi Berra the legendary baseball player believed it came from him and claimed that his character was defamed and subsequently sued.   The case was eventually dismissed, though the similarities in rambling speech is somewhat alike! …. apparently!

People also raise the question as to why they only made one Yogi Bear?  Well in fact they tried to make a second one, but they made a little Boo Boo!

5.      Though Mel Blanc was known for his association with Warner Bros. voicing such characters as Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, and Elma Fudd.  Mel also voiced Barney Rubble, and Dino the Dinosaur from The Flintstones once his exclusive contract with Warner Bros. had expired.
